History

The Foundling Museum tells the story of the UK’s first children’s charity and it’s first public gallery. In 1739, Thomas Coram had established the hospital to care for children who were at risk of abandonment.

“Between the 1740s and 1760s, mothers leaving their babies at the Foundling Hospital would also leave a small object as a means of identification. The hope was that they would one day be able to reclaim their child.” (more can be found at here)

Design Process

I have added some of the process in creating the final piece. It started with drawing different tokens and placing them next to each other to see how they could fit on the card. At times trying out one image of a token and changing the idea and colours. The next step was to reflect which layout worked best, playing around with the positions and colours. This back and forth discussion concluded with a 14 x 14 greeting card and the final design.
